Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve is one of Gauteng's premier ecotourism destinations. Set a short distance from Johannesburg and near the historical town of Heidelberg, this reserve boasts a representative sample of the fauna and flora of the Rocky Highveld Grassland biome. With 13 000 hectares of unspoiled natural environment and a mountain range characterised by meandering hiking trails, the reserve offers an unbelievably refreshing break from the bustling city life. Here, the altitude varies between 1 545 metres and 1 917 metres above sea level.
The reserve is popular amongst mountain-bikers and road-cyclists for its quiet roads and trails, beautiful scenery, brutally steep climbs and fast, twisting descents. There are two bicycle trails in the Tamboekies area near the main gate and Diepkloof farmhouse. The reserve also has a relatively easy eight-kilometer off-road trail through the Tamboekies area. This trail follows the jeep tracks used to patrol the perimeter fence. The trail networks are set along birding routes, giving twitchers the opportunity to spot more than 200 South African bird species that have made the reserve their home.
