The imposing Voortrekker Monument, situated in a nature reserve, was built in 1949 to commemorate the experience and culture of the 19th-century Voortrekkers. On a clear day, the monument can be seen from as far away as Krugersdorp on the West Rand.
It is possible to cycle circuits of less than three kilometers and more than 10 kilometers in the nature reserve surrounding the monument. You’ll ride against a backdrop of panoramic views over Pretoria and Johannesburg. On the exposed upper slopes, indigenous proteas grow between the grass and rocks, while non-predatory game may be encountered at every turn. The lower slopes are shady and wooded.
The route is predominantly jeep track, but some technical single-track paths with steep uphills and tricky descents may divert you. Ride the contours to relax, or go straight up and down if you are here for self-flagellation.
The different options make provision for the whole spectrum, from basic beginners to advanced tracks for the adrenalin junkies. Different starting points make it more interesting. All the trails are in a safe, fenced nature reserve with a wide variety of fauna and flora.
