Clifton’s four beaches are as beautiful and popular as the holiday-makers and residents who frequent them. Situated along Cape Town’s ‘millionaire row’, the clean white sands edge a turquoise sea dotted with luxury yachts and jet-skis. Clifton is set against a backdrop of some of the most sought-after real estate in the world.
All four beaches are usually well sheltered from the wind and are great vantage points from which to enjoy Cape Town’s mild climate and the spectacular sunsets over the ocean. The beaches are also close to trendy nightlife spots and restaurants in the neighbouring Camps Bay, Seapoint and Green Point suburbs.
The beaches are accessed by steep walkways through the granite outcrops that divide them into distinct areas - namely First, Second, Third and Fourth Beach. They are all considered safe for swimming, although the Atlantic waters are chilly, even in summer.
Each beach has its own personality, with First Beach attracting surfers and volleyball players. Second and Third beaches are popular with the 20-somethings looking to see and be seen while soaking up the sun, and Fourth Beach is the most family-friendly, with excellent facilities and strict environmental controls for which Blue Flag beaches are internationally renowned.
During summer, parking adjacent to the beaches is difficult to find, but there are regular buses and shuttles that service this vibrant stretch of coastline, just minutes from the city centre.
