Knysna is the top travel destination on the Garden Route. It lies on a picturesque lagoon, surrounded by indigenous forests, fynbos-covered mountains, rivers and a ruggedly beautiful coastline.

Springtide Sailing Charters run daytime and sunset cruises on the lagoon. Its boat, the Outeniqua, is stable, smooth and fast. Launched in 1998, it’s a sleek 50ft monohull with a beam of four metres and interior clearance of 1.9 metres - perfect for cruising.

On charters she sails into the ocean through The Heads - the massive sandstone formations that protect the estuary and form the entrance ‘gates’ to the lagoon. From her decks you get a close-up view of these incredible formations and their caves as you slice out into the waves. Once beyond the Heads she turns west to follow the coastline towards Buffalo Bay. There is a good chance of seeing pelagic birds, whales and dolphins before you return to the shelter of the lagoon.

On the sunset cruise you toast the end of the day with a glass of bubbly. On the daytime trips the Outeniqua anchors in the calm waters of the lagoon. You can hop overboard for a swim or simply relax on deck and enjoy a feast of Mediterranean delicacies before returning to the quays.
