About

The Faerie Glen Nature Reserve, situated in the heart of residential Pretoria, offers nature-loving urbanites a quiet green escape. It is one of the city’s best kept secrets.

Covering 128ha of grasslands and bushveld woodlands, the reserve has great ecological and geological diversity. It is home to zebra, impala and red hartebeest as well as many small, mainly nocturnal animals, and over 60 species of trees.

The park is renowned for its birdlife and about 150 bird species have been recorded. Early on a summer’s morning, or late afternoon, is when bird lovers should be scouring the reserve with their binoculars.

The Moreleta river cuts through the park and its many tributaries keep urban hikers company on 3 self-guided walking routes. Trails vary from 2km to 4km in length, and can be combined if you fancy a longer trek. A detour to the top of Renosterkop, part of the Bronberg mountain range in the north of the park, offers wonderful views.

The Faerie Glen Nature Reserve is fully fenced, and its well-maintained footpaths are ideal for shorter scenic strolls. Four-legged ramblers are welcome on leashes.

Pack a picnic basket (no fires, please) and spend a day chilling out in this popular but peaceful park. The Municipality charges a fee of R8.00 for adults, and R5.00 for school children and pensioners, while pre-school children enter for free. Sign in at the old Plumbago Tea Room, now a visitor’s centre, as you enter the reserve. Gate opening and closing times: 06:00-18:00.

Those who would like to contribute to the welfare of the reserve can join the Friends of the Faerie Glen Nature Reserve (visit www.fgnr.co.za or e-mail [email protected]). They organise birding mornings as well as regular alien invasive hacks to restore the ecological biodiversity of this unique landscape which is the last remaining ecosystem within the city where both ridge and flood plain morphology occur.

Address: General Louis Botha Drive, Pretoria
