About

On the southern outskirts of Pretoria near the Fountains Valley, just 5km from the city centre, is the Groenkloof Nature Reserve. Surrounded by high-rise buildings and busy highways, few city dwellers are aware of the wildlife sanctuary and green belt hiding in their backyard.

Groenkloof was proclaimed in 1895 to protect wild, non-predatory game, but within a century, most of the reserve’s natural flora and fauna had been depleted. In 1994, the Department of Nature Conservation assumed responsibility for the property and commenced clean-up operations to restore the natural vegetation. It also released indigenous antelope back into the reserve.

Groenkoof Nature Reserve offers an enormous variety of activities - from birding, hiking and mountain biking to 4x4 trails, game drives (including night drives), and guided horse trails. Amenities for day visitors include picnic and barbeque facilities - or dine in style at Moyo restaurant. If it’s been a while since you roused yourself in the morning to be greeted by a bushveld sunrise and the sight of antelope grazing on your doorstep, Groenkloof also has self-catering huts for hire.

Address: Access is via the Fountains Valley Resort, Christina de Wit Avenue, Groenkloof.
