About

Less than a two hour drive from Johannesburg and a world away from stressful city living is the Mountain Sanctuary Park in the Magaliesberg Mountains. If you’re looking for a place to de-stress, spend quality time with the family, or enjoy outdoor activities you’ll be hard-pressed to find somewhere more affordable and relaxing than this retreat - one of Gauteng’s oldest privately-owned nature reserves - above the Grootfontein Valley.

Peace, quiet and pristine nature is the reason that the Mountain Sanctuary Park is enduringly popular. But the reserve never feels overcrowded, even when its 30 large campsites, self-catering chalets and log cabins are fully booked.

A ban on TVs, radios, and excessive noise ensures the park’s serenity. Moreover, with 1 000 ha of wilderness area to explore on foot or mountain bike you needn’t see another soul (except the wildlife) for the majority of your stay.

If all you want to do is chill out, the park has swimming pool, sun downer deck, lapa, freezer facilities, and a small shop -  all close to the accommodation.

But you’re cheating yourself if you don’t explore the reserve’s amazing rock formations, picnic beside a waterfall and go swimming and bum-sliding in the rock pools.

There are demarcated short and long walking trails, but the real joy of Mountain Sanctuary Park is your freedom to go “off road” and see where your amble takes you. Certain sections of the park are off limits to guests, but access can be gained with a permit from the Mountain Club of South Africa.

It is best to approach the park from the north. The road leading up the mountain is in pretty bad shape and should only be attempted in a 4x4.
