The Rust de Winter Nature Reserve is a good area in which to find a range of the common thornveld and broadleaf woodland birds that occur around Pretoria. It has a popular dam that attracts large numbers of anglers and interesting water birds.

Several hundreds of  bird species have been recorded at Rust de Winter Nature Reserve - attracted by its range of habitats. These include excellent broadleaf woodland, rocky woodland slopes, alluvial acacia veld, mixed woodland, riverine forest, the dam wall and surroundings, open water, marshy areas and areas of grassland when the water level drops. Visitors can also expect to see some game including waterbuck, zebra, warthog, aardvark, crocodile and kudu.

There is only one basic route along the western shore of the dam, which on weekends is dominated by anglers. Although it is rocky in places it is relatively easily passable with a sedan vehicle -  but it also makes for an enjoyable walk. Camping is allowed along the shore, but facilities are limited to basic field toilets and braai sites.

Rust de Winter Nature Reserve forms part of the Dinokeng “Big Five” Game Reserve, which is under development.
