Haenertsburg is the village heart of the Magoebaskloof mountains, a picturesque region fondly referred to by locals as ‘the mountain’. It’s an unusually high mist area with a lot of rainfall, thick indigenous forests, rolling grasslands and incredible views. For these reasons the area has long attracted adventurers, artists, travellers and day trippers.
Haenertsburg is a friendly and somewhat eccentric place, with a small selection of interesting shops. These offer arts and crafts, books, curios, fresh produce, and antiques and collectibles. There are also charming bistros, cafes, B&Bs and an iconic village pub named after Iron Crown, the district’s highest peak.
From the village the Magoebaskloof Pass descends to the town of Tzaneen. This is one of the steepest passes in South Africa, dropping over 600m in its descent, with adventure waiting at every turn.
There are look-out points, picturesque forests, waterfalls, roadside stalls and spots of historic interest.
The mountains and wilderness areas around Haenertsburg are filled with adventure opportunities. These range from gentle forest rambles to wild adrenalin-pumping canopy tours. Haenertsburg and ‘the mountain’ offer popular fly-fishing spots, and excellent for birding and botanising. The Ebenezer Dam is home to the annual Ebenezer Mile and a host of year-round water sports and activities.
