Blythedale Beach

North Coast

Not too long ago Blythedale Beach was one of the proverbial hidden gems on the North Coast. Now the secret’s out and investors and vacationers have made their moves on this lovely little town. It’s not surprising: Blythedale is beautiful, peaceful and surrounded by nature.

The Umvoti estuary, south of town, forms part of the Blythedale Conservancy and is home to a breeding population of the scarce collared pratincole (formerly the red-winged pratincole). Thanks to the patches of indigenous forests, the birdlife in the area is outstanding and will keep twitchers entertained for hours. A bit further north of Blythedale is Prince’s Grant, a renowned estate with an exceptional golf course.

Like much of this area, Blythedale and its surrounds are closely linked to King Shaka and the creation of the Zulu nation.

KwaDukuza (previously known as Stanger) is a short drive inland from Blythedale. It was built where Shaka’s kraal once stood. Also not far away is the town of Groutville, home to the Albert Luthuli Museum. The first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize, Albert John Luthuli grew up in Groutville and later went on to play a major part in the struggle against apartheid.

But if it is beaches you’re after, Blythedale is as well endowed in this department - as are any of the North Coast resort towns. Shark nets keep bathers safe.

Look out for

Visit the King Shaka Memorial in KwaDukuza/Stanger for a better understanding of this fascinating man. You can also see where he was killed and visit his grave.

The Umvoti estuary is where a wide variety of waterbirds and waders can be spotted. Take a stroll through the indigenous bush and see what forest birds you can see.

Blythedale Beach is one of the better surfing beaches on the North Coast, so take along your surfboard to spend some time in the ‘green room’.

Hit the fairways at Prince’s Grant for a round of golf on this highly rated course.
