If you fancy a fun day out with the family, want to try scuba diving for the first time, up your qualification level or simply feel the need to get weightless, then Bass Lake, in Henley-on-Klip just south of Johannesburg, is a good option.
And while inland diving can’t compare with that of the open ocean, one big advantage of fresh water is that you avoid stinging eyes as you practise your mask-clearing and other skills. Unsurprisingly, it’s the most popular training venue in the Highveld, with courses from basic open water through to instructor training, as well as casual diving.
The old, rehabilitated dolomite mine is fed by spring water and offers diving to 23 metres, with, you guessed it, bass being the most commonly sighted fish. A number of wrecks, including a bus, aeroplane, various cars and an old helicopter, make for interesting underwater exploration for more experienced divers and the position of each is indicated by a marker on the surface to aid navigation.
Air fills, gear rentals and equipment sales are available and there are luxury tents and backpacker accommodation for those wanting to stay overnight. Non-divers can bring their own mountain bikes, kayaks and other toys, and swim and chill out by the lake and fully licensed coffee shop.
