The Vaal River is South Africa's second longest river, and a recreational hub just over an hour’s drive from Johannesburg. The 1 210km-long waterway and the Vaal Dam that it flows into deliver fun and adventure for the whole family.
With an 880km-long shoreline, the Vaal Dam is a favourite watersports playground that offers canoeing, paddle boating, powerboating, jet skiing, fishing and more. It’s possible to camp and caravan beside the dam, or stay in style at one of the guest lodges along its banks.
In addition to outdoor action, the Vaal is packed with family entertainment, and it is with this in mind that the Vaal Meander lifestyle route was developed.
Catering to foodies, art lovers, and even those looking for good quality second-hand cars, the Vaal has a lot to offer. Think nature reserves, golf courses, wildlife sanctuaries, music festivals, agricultural shows and of course, with all the lovely scenery: wedding venues.
One of the most popular events on the annual calendar is the Vaal River Wine Meander, billed as a winter wine route. The organisers invite over 25 top Cape estates to head to the Highveld for two weeks and bring their best vintages with them. Here you can taste and buy at better than cellar prices.
