The Diamond Dash Trail Run takes place in the 18 000ha Seringveld Conservancy situated about 15km north-west of Cullinan. A group of concerned residents who recognised the need to protect the exceptional natural and historical heritage of the area established this conservancy in 1997. Casa Riparia (The River House) is next to a scenic dam in Tweefontein Spruit on Goodland Estate.
The Seringveld is part of the southernmost area of Waterberg geology and flora, and is characterised by deep sandy soils. Several rocky ridges traverse the area, as do a handful of spruits. These have a mix of wetlands and small irrigation dams along their courses. The region contains mixed woodland with characteristic sand veld trees, as well as fragments of natural grassland.
The route incorporates three calf-busting climbs, followed by some technical descents and a mixture of fast sections along undulating single-track and jeep track. It is a true all-round test of trail running ability. Runners will revel in the tranquil bushveld setting, abundant bird life and game, like the rare roan antelope. The infamous scramble up to the first koppie is generally a hot topic after the event.
All trails take runners through the natural habitat of a number of antelope like waterbuck, wildebeest, zebra, kudu and impala. Much of the course is on established footpaths, smooth jeep track and contouring mountain paths, all providing varied and challenging terrain. The Seringveld Trail Park, launched in November 2011, offers runners the opportunity to run the Diamond Dash race trails whenever they please (www.seringveldtrails.co.za).
The Diamond Dash normally takes place in autumn and spring. The start venue is at the beautiful Goodland Estate (www.goodland.co.za). Three distances cover everything from short sprints to medium-distance trails. All are carefully designed and selected to offer new and exciting routes with testing downhills and climbs. Entries are limited to 500 runners.
The turn-off for Goodland Estate is opposite the turn-off for De Tweedespruit. It is an easy 15km drive north-west of the well-known diamond mining town of Cullinan.
